I provide the unique perspective and insight as a mentor, guide and facilitator to enable my clients and students to maximize their potential and eliminate the negative effects of  adversity, obstacles or even tragedy that they have experienced and become effective leaders.

My approach is unique in that we come to this point having researched the topic of overcoming adversity and leadership development as the focus of virtually all of my Doctoral research.  The unique facts are that:

• I conducted an extensive academic research of the literature, including books, articles and other research on the topic of overcoming adversity and leadership development.

• I conducted a unique series of in depth interviews with over twenty prominent leader participants, prior to becoming prominent leaders, experienced various degrees of adversity in their youth and adult lives. 

• My over thirty years of personal business leadership and management experiences in a number of senior management positions in several major public companies has provided me with a unique perspective and insight. This corporate business leadership combined with my own successful entrepreneurial experiences, and my twenty years of experience as a major University Trustee, and the youngest President of the University Board of Trustees give me a “real world” insight not found in the book and academic articles.

• My Doctoral research and findings were reviewed and commented on by seven noted world class leadership scholars including: Dr Ken Blanchard, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Jim Kouzes, Dr. John Kotter, Dr. Paul Stoltz, and Dr. Meg Wheatley

•  My Doctoral dissertation interviews with over a dozen prominent leaders, plus the review of my findings by world class leadership scholars bears out the following: (a) early adversity in their youth was not the most important event in life; (b) obstacles and adversity were perceived as challenges can be turned into opportunities; (c) facing adversity and successfully overcoming obstacles was important in their  progression and growth as leaders; (d) having mentors to help guide, motivate, and inspire them was very important; (e) being a Servant-Leader, serving people, and being humble were essential; (f) having a strong religious faith or strong family ties, or both, was important and helpful in overcoming adversity.

Who is Dr Howard Edward Haller?

Howard Edward Haller, Ph.D. is the Chief Enlightenment Officer of the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho based The Leadership Success Institute. His Doctoral dissertation in Leadership Studies at Gonzaga Univ. included interviews with prominent US leaders in business, politics, and higher education. Dr. Haller has over 35 years of proven successful business leadership experience, including over 20 years as a Senior Vice President, President, or CEO in major public companies. He will be turning is leadership Doctoral dissertation into a book titled: “Leadership: View From the Shoulders of Giants”

 Dr. Howard Edward Haller is a Licensed Real Estate Broker in California, Idaho, and Washington. He is also both a California Licensed Engineering Contractor and a California Licensed General Contractor. As a developer/project manager/contractor, he has built well over two million square feet of commercial buildings. As a Licensed Real Estate Broker, he has personally sold well over $100 million of commercial real estate, and he has negotiated and arranged over $250 million in commercial and residential real estate loans. Dr. Haller is also President & Chief Operating Officer of CPM LLC, a Super High Definition LED Sign Manufacturing and Advertising Company based out of San Francisco, with our manufacturing plant in Chen Chen, PRC (China).

Dr. Howard Edward Haller is President and CEO of Haller Companies, Haller Engineering & Construction Company, Inc., Trustee Emeritus of California State University, Northridge (former two term President of the University Board of Trustees).

He is also the Founder and Chief Enlightenment Officer of The Leadership Success Institute.

Personal note from Dr. Howard Edward Haller on his groundbreaking Doctoral research into overcoming adversities and developing leaders:

I am especial proud of my Doctoral research include rich and meaningful interviews, participants shared their stories, there experiences and their wisdom. I personally interviewed over twenty prominent leader participants for this research project including:

1. Schaja Shachnowski: a Jewish Holocaust survivor who escaped to western Germany, then immigrated to the United States , and subsequently rose from Private to Major General in the  U.S. Army;
   
   
2. Monzer Hourani: a Christian Arab immigrant who saw his mother killed in the Lebanese Civil War, but who became a successful real estate developer in Houston, Texas;
   
   
3. Tony Bonanzino: an Italian-American who grew up in a strict home for fatherless boys, who became the CEO of a large biotechnology and pharmaceutical business; 
   
   
4. Blenda Wilson: an African-American woman who overcame racial, gender, and age discrimination to become a leader in education policy and reform;
   
   
5. Dan Inouye: a Japanese-American man who was raised in poverty and who lost an arm in wartime, who became a U.S. Senator;
   
   
6. Orrin Hatch: a Mormon boy who grew up poor during the Depression, lost a brother in World War II, worked his way through high school, college, and law school, who is now a U.S. Senator;
   
   
7. H. H. Ziglar: a boy born into a large, poor, rural family who lost his father at age 5, then failed initially in sales until a mentor turned around his life, and now has built a nationwide training and motivational speaking firm;
   
   
8. John Malone: a self-described “middle class nerd” who worked his way through high school, college, and graduate school, who fought business and regulatory battles on many fronts, experienced the death of his mentor and majority shareholder, and eventually turned a small, struggling cable company into a $58 billion company;
   
   
9. Larry Pino: an Italian-American who struggled as a young attorney, lost a political campaign, went broke several times in a series of business ventures, led a turbulent early personal life, and then emerged as a successful entrepreneur with a happy marriage.

I also interviewed:

1. J. Terrence Lanni: the current Chairman and CEO of MGM Mirage one of the largest hotel and gaming companies, who previously built up and became  President of Caesars World (Hotels and Casinos);
   
   
2. Dr. Nido Qubein: a self made immigrant who came to America  with $50 and spoke no English, got a college education, he has build several major marketing firms and a leading financial institution, who is now President of High Point university;
   
   
3. Angelo Mozilo: a self made man, who is the co-founder and Chairman and CEO of Countrywide Financial Corporation, an S& P 500 company;
   
   
4. Dr. John Sperling: was born in poverty, was dyslexic and semi-literate but went on to get a Ph.D. from Cambridge and became the founder Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, of the Apollo Group, Inc., which owns the University of Phoenix, his is a true “Horatio Algier” story of going from poverty, to being a billionaire;
   
   
5. William Draper III: a major high-technology venture capitalist and former President of the U. S. Import-Export Bank under President Reagan, former Trustee of Yale University.
